Research Investigation
A preliminary site investigation in Ocean View, Cape Town, was conducted by the UCT team, focusing on informal dwellings and the home of community leaders Charles and Bernadette.
Historical Background
Ocean View was established during apartheid as a residential area for mixed-race individuals forcibly removed from neighboring "white areas." The community retains a rich history and diverse ancestry.
Community Findings
Charles and Bernadette have been pivotal in improving living conditions by legally allocating yard spaces to displaced families and advocating for better housing solutions.
Dwellings in Ocean View
The area comprises 48 informal housing units, classified into two types:
Type 1: Timber stud structures with corrugated or IBR sheeting for walls and roofs.
Type 2: Timber stud structures with timber boards, Rhiboards, or cladding for walls, and corrugated or IBR sheeting for roofs.
Charles and Bernadette’s home serves as a community prototype, incorporating sustainable and durable construction techniques.
Construction Methods and Materials
Local construction emphasizes recyclability and reusability, using locally sourced materials to reduce waste and costs.
Infrastructure and Amenities
The community lacks municipal water access and relies on rainwater harvesting systems. Challenges include inadequate wastewater management and the absence of basic water-related facilities.
Recommendations
Adopting construction methods that prioritize recyclability and reusability.
Ensuring reliable water and electricity infrastructure.
Promoting the use of ABTs to build homes resilient to environmental hazards.
